The Green and "Pond"

The Green and “Pond”

There has been much discussion about the “pond” on the village green since it existed. The original planning consent was for a pond, but it has never existed as such, and the present trees were never part of the original design and are thought to have been self-set.

At several village meetings it was agreed that there was a need to remove some or all, of the trees and to establish a more sustainable wild life area. In any event the trees need essential maintenance as they are over size and present a potential safety risk.

The best solution for resolving this long-standing issue has been discussed at various Parish Council meetings with consideration given to suggestions from members of the public.  The Parish Council has obtained various quotations for work over the past year.

On Monday 6th November the Parish Council agreed that the best and most cost-effective solution to maintaining the area is to remove the trees completely since any tree maintenance work would only be a temporary solution and would result in further costs in the future.

Subject to receiving the necessary confirmation of quotations work is likely to commence by the end of the month. Free wood will be available for collection by those who can use it. There will also be wood chippings available for delivery.

It is planned to replace the existing trees with more appropriate native trees and we are inviting residents to provide suggestions for use of this space.

Amongst options under consideration are:

The fill the “pond” and landscape the area with the planting of new trees

Planting a community orchard in this space

Maintaining some of the existing hollow

The Parish Council would like to hear from you with your suggestions for this space, please contact the clerk Jane Scarrott
